About Model NATO

A simulation of the North Atlantic Alliance for high school students, where young people learn diplomacy by practising it.

Delegates in the halls of the Palace of Parliament, 14th edition

Why we started

Model NATO was born out of the desire of a few young enthusiasts and their mentor, Daniela Bordei, to offer a new perspective on security and a better tomorrow. The lack of youth involvement in foreign affairs, diplomacy and politics was our motivation to bridge the gap left by an education system that favours theory over practice.

We believe young people should not remain mere observers of social, political and economic phenomena: sooner rather than later, current affairs become their reality. Model NATO is a practical exercise in leadership, strategy and teamwork, designed to help teenagers understand the role NATO plays for the security of life on earth.

How it works

Participants take on the role of delegates of the Allied nations and sit in committees modeled on NATO’s own, from the North Atlantic Council to its crisis simulations and specialized committees.

Over several days they debate, negotiate and draft communiqués, which each committee amends and votes on under the rules of procedure, guided by student chairpersons.

Opening and closing ceremonies bring diplomats, officials and NATO representatives to speak with participants. The best delegates are recognized, and those who return for three editions become Model NATO Ambassadors.
